Snakes and Earrings

   顔面 に ピアス を 刺し 、 龍 の 刺青 を 入れたパンク男 、 アマ と 知り合った19歳 の ルイ 。 アマ の 二股 の 舌 に 興味 を 抱いたルイ は 、 シバ と いう男 の 店 で 、 躊躇（ちゅうちょ）なく自分 の 舌 に も ピアス を 入れる 。 それ を 期 に 、 何か に 押されるか の よう に 身体改造へ と の めり込み 、 シバ と も 関係 を 持つルイ 。 た が 、 過去 に アマ が 殴り倒したチンピラ の 死亡記事 を 見つけたこ と で 、 ルイ は 言いよう の ない不安 に 襲われ は じめる 。

   本書 を 読み進める の は 、 ある意味 、 苦痛 を 伴う行為だ 。 身体改造 と いう自虐的な行動 を 通じ て 、 肉体 の 痛み 、 ひい て は 精神 の 痛み を 喚起させる筆力 に 、 読み手 は 圧倒される に 違いない 。 自ら の 血 を 流すこ と を 忌避し 、 それゆえ に 他者 の 痛み に 対する想像力 を 欠落しつつある現代社会 に おい て 、 本書 の 果たす文学的役割 は 、 特筆 に 価する も の と いえよう 。 弱冠20歳 で の 芥川賞受賞 、 若者 の 過激な生態や風俗 と いった派手な要素 に 目 を 奪われ が ち で は ある が 、 「未来 に も 、 刺青 に も 、 スプリットタン に も 、 意味なん て ない」 と 言い切るルイ の 言葉から垣間見える の は 、 真正面から文学 と 向き合おう と する真摯なま で の 著者 の 姿 で ある 。 （中島正敏）

They say never to judge a book by its cover, but I must confess that glancing over this novel already gave me the shivers. I was right, for this novel was powerful. It brings you to a view of the dark side of Tokyo life of sadists and masochists, where people see no future and pain brings pleasure. The novel revolves around Lui, a girl of 19, and her two friends Ama and Shiba-san the tattoo artist. As Lui heads to tongue-slitting and getting a tattoo, Shiba wants rough love in return, done in secret from Ama, of whom Lui lives with. Yet after a violent encounter in the backstreets, and Ama vanishing, Lui struggles with her emotions and choices...Although this is not the genre I usually read, I must say that this was one book that pierced right through my heart, with me wanting more.

本 の 装幀 に 惹かれ て 手 に 取ったら，
芥川賞 の 「蛇 に ピアス」 の 英訳本 で した 。
後 で 原作 を 少し立ち読みしたら，
言い回しや登場人物 の 台詞 が
あまり に 口語的・俗語的 で
アク の 強さ に 驚きました が ，
訳本 の 方 は ，普通 の 表現 に 置き換えられ て いる の で ，
ちょっ と 毒気 の 抜けたファンタスティックな感じ が し ます 。
と は いえ，舌ピアスや入れ墨など の 身体改造 に の めりこみ，
道 を 歩けば人 が よけるような外見 の 彼ら は ，十分シュール 。
そし て ，そんな世間 と 隔絶し て いるか の ような若者たち の
意外 に 純粋な内面 が ，最後 の 場面 の 涼やかな水 に 象徴され て ，
うまく描き出され て いる と 思い ます 。
酷評 も 多々あるよう で す が ，
私 は ，賞賛派 で す 。
